Seth Surmises – If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears

The Mama and the Papas-  If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears

Preconceptions: I’ve heard all theses songs before. It’s not like I’ve never been in an elevator.

After listening: … Elevator.

Fav Tracks:CaliforniaDreaming fits their style and is iconic.

Least Fave: Do You Want To Dance & SpanishHarlemare inferior covers, reminiscent of the Pat Boone-ing of Little Richard. Everything interesting about the originals are washed away in a vanilla-scented fog.

Overall: This album exemplifies the watered-down lite 60s approach to pop music, with sappy & superfluous string sections and saccharine sweet harmonies. Where the Beach Boys took those harmonies and experimented, the M&Ps stuck with the Wonder Bread sound. It comes off as terribly dated and bland, which is weird considering what raging freaks they all were. After his daughter’s interviews in recent years, Papa John Phillips actually beats Papa John Schnatter on the creepometer. All Schnatter ever did was make bad pizza while rockin’ a comb-over.

Rating: 2.5
