Seth Surmises – In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

NeutralMilkHotel-In the Aeroplane Over the SeaPreconception: None. I have never heard of this artist or album. Isn’t having the sixth best selling vinyl album kind of like being the sixth most successful Blockbuster location?
After Listening: Hrrm. I really like other bands that have obviously ripped this off. How have I never heard this before?

Favorite Tracks: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, The Fool

Overall: Some songs sound like folky emo, some like a marching band conducted by Steve Albini. The lyrics range from beautifully poetic to indulgently twee, yet it all adds up nicely. More than any other RC selection, this album benefits from listening in its entirety. The brass, stings, snare, and uilleann pipes create a deep, sometimes cacophonous sound that still is never cluttered. Did I hear a Theremin in Ghost? I’ve listened to this album twice this morning, and wouldn’t mind hearing it again after lunch.
