|Tom Waits- Rain DogsPreconceived Notions: It’s my pick, and it’s on my list on perfect albums, so I fully expected it to be awesome.
After Listening: Listening to it at work seems slightly wrong. I feel that people can smell Jim Beam and Luckies from my cube. “Hotels & whiskey & sad luck dames…”
Favorite Tracks: Blind Love is a better country song than anything that has charted since Patsy Cline died.Union Squareis a joyous celebration of 70s seedyNew York City, Gun Street Girl needs to be a Tarantino film.
Least Favorite: Sorry, I like ‘em all. Even the beat poem and the one Rod Stewart tried so hard to ruin.
Overall: Starting with a junkfiend jazzman’s pirate shanty and ending with a French Quarter funeral march, this album defies labeling. It’s equal parts Pre-Guiliani NYC and Post-Katrina NOLA. It’s Runyon, Faulkner, Capote and Bukowski, with just a touch of Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes.Mississippijunkyard percussion backing theSalvation Army streetband from Guys & Dolls with GE Smith & Keith Richards on guitar?
