Seth Surmises-Radiator

Preconceptions: I have been vaguely aware that this band existed, but I always assumed it was one of the X-popping, Red Bull-n-Vokka, track suits-n-trainers Manchester Stone Roses-y crowd. Turns out, they’re Welsh as fuck, and use real instruments. Point: Super Furry Animals.

Favorite Track(s): Mountain People (for the Ray Daviesness), Hermann ‘s Pauline (for the physicist name-checks),Torra Fy Ngwallt Yn Hir. (for the Welshness)

Least Favorite Track: Chupacabras is the sort of song written at 3am on a moving tour bus while the band giggles off the night’s drugs. It should have stayed there.

Overall: It was a struggle to assemble this album on the interweebs, but I won’t hold it against the band. The album is what you get when you take Radiohead and make them write actual songs instead of the ambient pretentious snoozepop. Less dated than Pop Will Eat itself or Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, SFA are a little inconsistent and heavy on the extraneous noises for me to put the album in heavy rotation but several of these songs will be iTuned when I get home.

3.0
